Inductee Biography for MR. LUCKY’S
In 1966 Phoenix businessman Bob Sikora built and opened what was to become Arizona’s first gambling casino called Mr. Lucky’s. When the state of Arizona vetoed the idea of casino’s Mr. Lucky’s reverted to a nightclub featuring country music upstairs and rock and roll teen acts in the basement !
A country band called VIRG WARNER & THE ROGUES would begin packing in music fans and dancers to the huge Mr. Lucky’s dancefloor and the west side club became a hit with the locals. J. David Sloan who had been touring with Willie Nelson in Nashville moved to Phoenix to leave the music business and get into construction when he was lured away to Mr. Lucky’s to eventually lead the ROGUES band for over 30 years.
This nightspot became a local legend featuring concerts with all the big name acts of the day in country music. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Marty Robbins, Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney and many others also played the club. The Friday night fish fry was open to families with children and a talent contest would feature area children and aspiring singers. One of those talent contest winners, Jordin Sparks would go on to win AMERICAN IDOL on network television in 2007.
In the 80’s members of the ROGUES band would produce albums and tour with newcomer LYLE LOVETT helping to launch his career. By 2004 times and musical tastes had changed and Mr. Lucky’s closed its doors after a nearly 40 year run as one of the most popular country nightspots in the USA ! (bio by Jim West)

The boys are back in the studio on the West Coast and the Midwest tracking and producing an album of new music due to hit juke boxes and ipods across the universe this summer. Chris Stoll at Zeta Studios in Toledo will be finalizing the mixing and mastering of the new CD. At the same time production is under way on several archival projects that were recorded at Katherine Drive Studio in Huntington Beach, CA, IAM Studios in Irvine, CA and a live concert collection. Look for these releases and an intergallactic tour later in the year.

Extremely rare self-published album available at Rockaway Records in Los Angeles, CA.
The 12″ vinyl LP is listed at a sale price of $200. Brothers Wayne and Gary Johnson began re-selling albums in 1979 after attending one of the legendary record swap meets in the Capitol Records parking lot in Hollywood. What began as a hobby more than 30 years ago, quickly turned into a business when they were virtually forced to open a store, if only to house their growing collection!
Rockaway purchased “Rainbow Records”, a small well-known record store in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. They now started selling new and used records and cassettes in addition to collectibles. Rockaway grew so quickly, they had to move 2 more times, finally settling into the present Silver Lake location in 1992.
In 1984 another brother, Alan, opened a Rockaway in Mesa, Arizona. Sadly, that store is now closed. Then in 1992, yet another brother, Scott, opened a Rockaway in Brisbane, Australia.
While nearly every independent record store (and many chains) in Los Angeles has closed, Rockaway is flourishing. Wayne and Gary are aggressively acquiring extensive record industry collections and purchasing personal collections of CDs, records, DVDs, concert-related items, tour programs, toys, as well as rock ‘n’ roll promo items and collectibles. Frequently paying five and six figures for valuable collections, Rockaway recently paid $600,000 for a single collection of vinyl and $150,000 for a CD collection. Another “sad to be leaving town” song. Features excellent lyrics and lead vocal by Robin. Nice overdrive on the guitar solos with just the right amount of Mellotron orchestration. A tight bottom end rhythm drives this song down the road.
